In this topic, you will learn how to generate a new route avoiding criteria that you choose.

What's covered in this topic

Building a route is at the heart of planning a flight. In order to build a route, you must first add a flight to the system by completing the mandatory fields (ALC, Flight, Origin, STD, Destination, and Aircraft). This is done through the List screen or the Plan screen.

 In this topic, you will learn:

  • How to generate a route using the Must not use field
  • How to use the Apply and Apply & Compute buttons.

Interaction 1 Click the CZQ Flight list item.

Interaction 1 Click the Plan menu item.

Flight information appears in the Info screen. 

A saved route is displayed on the map. 

Interaction 1 Click the Route menu item.

The route box in the PLAN UI will display available city-pair saved routes, and depending upon end user configuration FAA Preferred Routes, IFPS Routes, and available CDRs.

 In the event that no saved routes are available, the system can be configured to generate optimum routes (displayed here) which are automatic dynamic routes based upon the users settings.

Interaction 1 Click the Optimum route list item.

Interaction 1 Click  beside the Save button on the map.

Once you click on a route, its details are displayed.

Click the arrow to expand the map. 

Interaction 1 Click the Airspace button.

The next steps are going to show you how to view FIRs. Afterward, you are going to generate a route avoiding a FIR and an airway. 

Interaction 1 Click the FIRs menu item.

Interaction 1 Click the FIRs check box.

You are going to generate a route avoiding the UHMM FIR. 

You are also going to avoid the second and third airway.

Interaction 1 Click the New button.

Interaction 1 Click the Must not use: input field.

Interaction 1 Enter FIR UHMM, ORCUS+K1+E, YYJ+CY+V into the Must not use: field.

If you are avoiding multiple items they must be separated with a comma (,) or the route will not be generated.


 Rules are specified as follows:

  • Waypoints - add the name of the waypoint, e.g.: YYZ+CY
  • Airways - add the name of the airway, e.g.: YQT+CY J500 YOW+CY
  • Restricted Areas - add the keyword (AREA) and the name of the restricted area, e.g.: AREA CY:609M
  • FIRs - add the keyword (FIR) and the name of the flight information region, e.g.: FIR CZYZ
  • Countries - add the keyword COUNTRY and the country code, e.g., COUNTRY CA.

Click Generate to build your route. 

Interaction 1 Click the Generate button.

Interaction 1 Click  beside the Save button on the map.

When route generation is complete, its details are displayed.


 Notice that the airways you avoided are no longer in the route. 

Click the arrow to expand the route. 

The blue route is the new route generated. Notice that FIR UHMM has been avoided. 

Interaction 1 Click the Plan menu item.

Interaction 1 Click the Route menu item.

The new route displays in the route group. You can click on it to apply or it can be applied through the Route screen. 

Interaction 1 Click the Optimum route 1 list item.

Interaction 1 Click the Apply button.

Apply the route and compute the flight. 

Interaction 1 Click the Apply & Compute button.
